2008 Biography
J. E. Richard Compensation Committee Advisor, J. RICHARD & CO.
Between 1989 and 1996, “J.” Richard also developed and conducted Board and Compensation Committee educational workshops for the National Association of Corporate Directors (“NACD”). He served on NACD Blue Ribbon Executive and Director Pay Commissions and as Guest Editor of the update of the Report of the NACD Blue Ribbon Commission on Executive Compensation, Guidelines for Corporate Directors. He also has written numerous articles for Directors Monthly, Directors & Boards, and other prominent business periodicals. Additionally, he is the author of the Compensation Committee Guide (seven editions), Board of Director Development and Compensation (three editions), and an NACD Monograph: The Board’s Strategic Review Responsibility. Prior to establishing his own compensation consulting firm in 1984 that is based in Half Moon Bay, California, “J.” Richard was associated with the Boston and New York offices of Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers), the Los Angeles office of Arthur Young & Co. (now Ernst & Young), and the San Francisco offices of Hay Group and Towers Perrin as an Executive Compensation Consulting Practice Leader. He also held the top human resources executive positions with Centex and Hunt Development in Texas and was a Senior Compensation Analyst with General Dynamics and Mattel Toys in Chicago and Los Angeles, respectively. He is a 1968 graduate of Western Michigan University’s Business School and received his Master’s Degree from Michigan State University in 1970. He has been an active member of WorldatWork (Lifetime Member status), the National Association of Corporate Directors (Founder and Board Member of the San Francisco Chapter and Board Member of the Northern California Chapter), the National Association of Stock Plan Professionals (Founding Member), and the National Center for Employee Ownership. “J.” Richard has also served as Co-Chairman of the Northern California Human Resources Association’s annual compensation conferences between 2001 and 2004. He has also developed eLearning courses and conferences for the Association of Executive Search Consultants (“AESC”) regarding executive officer and Board of Director pay practices and trends.
